Between helping clients and eating chocolate bunnies, we’ve been really busy this month!
Mark your calendars for the American Tourist: “A Night Aboard the Orient Express” set for June 7th from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, 1700 NE 63rd Street, Oklahoma City. Our great volunteers are hard at work and this year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest one yet.
We also need volunteers to help us the night of the event, and we would love to have you join us! If you would like to volunteer, you can register here, or, you may contact Periann Pulliam at (405) 232-5507 or email her at ppulliam@upwardtransitions.org.
We all get by with a little help from our friends, and Upward Transitions is no exception. Our friends at J.Jill at Penn Square Mall donated these beautiful shelves that are already being put to good use in our food pantry. And the folks at the Christmas Connection brought us a nice stash of luggage that we’re sure will be put to good use helping stranded travelers!
Upward Transitions staff rolled up their sleeves, grabbed trash bags and joined thousands of Oklahoma City residents by participating in the “OKC Beautiful Litter Blitz.” Last year the “Litter Blitz” picked up more than 181,000 pounds of trash off Oklahoma City streets.
Upward Transitions was honored that some of the photos from the “How I See OKC” photo exhibit will be used by the City of Oklahoma City for the 2014 “Point-in-Time Count” survey of the homeless.
And, finally, some sad news, Billy Ray, who participated in the “How I See OKC” photo exhibit, passed away recently. Billy Ray recently received a new prosthetic leg and seemed happy with all the attention he received during the opening of the exhibit. During the reception, Billy Ray stood, leaning on his walker and spoke to the crowd. He gave the crowd this piece of wisdom, “You only know where you’ve been; you don’t know where you’re going.” Billy Ray will be missed by many.
